Landscaping for Bushfire with Hamish McCallum
Posted on 12 October, 2026 by Lori
As part of the Barkers Creek Climate Readiness Project funded by Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR), Hamish McCallum, from local business Phoenix Wildfire Management and Fryerstown CFA will share his extensive knowledge on landscaping and plant selection for bushfire prone areas in this evening presentation in Barkers Creek.
Hamish began his career in indigenous revegetation and nursery work before studying permaculture, whole-farm planning and sustainable farming. Drawing on more than 20 years of firefighting experience in the CFA, combined with expertise in landscape and building design, permaculture principles and Indigenous plant knowledge, Hamish has developed an integrated approach to bushfire management. He designed and built a fire resilient home and landscape in the heart of one of Victoria’s most bushfire prone areas, combining practical experience with thoughtful, place-based design.
Hamish now runs a bushfire planning and management business, assessing bushfire risk across the state and providing expert planning and risk management advice to support resilient development outcomes.
