Mount Alexander Nature Kids
The health and well-being benefits of connecting with nature are becoming increasingly well recognised. In addition, there is growing evidence that nature engagement in schools can improve academic performance, by enhancing attention and memory skills which are critical to learning. Connecting Country has teamed up with Carinya Child Care Centre and Chewton Primary School and local Castlemaine artist Jane Rusden to develop the and engagement Mount Alexander Nature Kids Resource Pack to provide a series of fun and engaging, local environmental educational resources (with associated teaching notes) that can be implemented by teachers and carers without a background in environmental knowledge. It is targeted towards kinder and primary school aged children and the people that care for them. Through learning more about our local environment, it is hoped that kids (and in turn, their families) will develop the desire to advocate and care for it. This project was made possible with funding from the Mount Alexander Shire Council Community Grants Program.

Mount Alexander Region Nature MapA beautifully illustrated map of natural landmarks and ecological highlights of the Mount Alexander Region. The map is a key part of the resource pack, tying all activities together and giving a sense of place and context.

Connecting Country Engaged with Traditional Owners, Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation and Nalderun Education Aboriginal Corporation in the development of these resources. We acknowledge Djaara and Taungurung as the traditional owners of the Mount Alexander region. Use of Dja Dja Wurrung language in these resources has been approved by Djali Balak (Djaara language repatriation committee) and the content has been informed in discussions with Djaara people. Permission for reprinting or use of language outside of these resources should be sought from Djali Balak.
The Nature Kids pack includes 5 printable resources with associated teachers notes. Suggestions on how the resources can be applied, including extension opportunities, have been provided however educators and/or carers are free to adapt and use the resources in any way that fits teachers and students needs, goals and abilities.
